Life Lesson 51: Giving Thanks Costs You Nothing

Giving Thanks Costs You Nothing

It seems appropriate to end our 51 life lessons for boomer males with what is perhaps the simplest, yet most powerful lesson in the book. Giving thanks.

Host: Tom Hering

“Don’t forget, a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.”
— H. Jackson Brown

That is the simple act of saying one word:

“Thanks.”

And I’d bet the house that everyone reading this learned the power of thanks during the early years of life. Your mother reminded you to say “thanks” when someone did something nice or considerate for you. Your
teacher reaffirmed that when a student also performed an act of kindness for you or a classmate.

The problem is, I hear it so infrequently today. People don’t thank the checker at the supermarket for the help in bagging groceries. They also forget to appreciate the work of the teller at their bank, mechanic who tuned up the car or driver who let you creep into their lane.

And here is what most baffling of all.

Giving thanks to someone does not cost you anything, other than an extra two seconds and a breath of air.

As author H. Jackson Brown says above, “Don’t forget, a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.”

And in that spirit, may I say thanks for reading through these 51 lessons of life. Maybe you have already learned them and they are playing a major role in your third act of life.

In my book 51 Life Lessons Every Boomer Male Should Have Learned by Now, I write about key lessons that I believe every evolved boomer male needs to know to make his third act his best. They fall into one of three categories: health, wealth and happiness. Each lesson serves to inspire and motivate you.
