Life Lesson 36: Age is a State of Mind

Age is a State of Mind

My godmother used to say it to me all the time. “Age is a state of mind.” At the time, she was in her mid-70s and I was in my early 20s. And I used to think, what the hell does that mean?

“Men do not quit playing because they grow old; they grow old because they quit.”
— Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.

Then a decade flies by and the light bulb goes on.

After observing men in my profession (advertising), I saw exactly what she was talking about.

It wasn’t that they neglected their health (although it is factor). Nor was it the fact they were not blessed with good genes (although that is a factor, too).

But the guys who truly looked young were the guys that thought that way.

In other words, they saw the world in a curious light. They did not harbor hate or tremble in fear. They
carried no grudges or regrets.

They subscribed to a simple philosophy: they embraced everything that came their way, particularly the
bad.

These “youthful” guys believed that everything that happened to them along the journey was a huge opportunity to learn something about themselves and the world they lived in. They remained open to other ways of thinking about things in general and their life in particular.

Obviously, that had everything to do with their state of mind.

And why they never seemed to grow old.

Even when they were in their 90s.

Tom Hering is a certified Boomer. Just ask him about his love for Shasta grape soda, fritos and VW bugs. By day, he is a copywriter and storyteller (www.heringcreative.com) at his world hq in Portland, OR. Previously, he worked as writer and creative director for respected agencies in Seattle and Portland. Tom is somewhat fanatical about working out (practice what he preaches at boomermale.com), rooting for the Ducks and enjoying the proverbial IPAs of P-town. Hanging out on weekends includes hiking the Columbia River Gorge and cycling (a new addiction) with one of his sons and a few friends.
