Life Lesson 37: Nature Cures All

Nature Cures All

Right around my 50th birthday, I went to see my doc for a physical. The
kind you get every five to ten years, at least when you are younger and in
good health.

Host: Tom Hering

“I go to nature to be soothed and healed,
and to have my senses put in order.”
— John Burroughs

He asked me how I was feeling physically and I replied with a thumbs-up. Then he inquired about my emotional health and I wavered my hand a bit. I wasn’t really able to put my finger on the problem (later I realized it was the beginning of the end of my marriage).

Doc went on to tell me that of the patients he sees daily, nearly 80 percent suffer from some form of depression. I was absolutely shocked!

And then he got a bit more philosophical with me and said, “You know, Tom, man was not built for living in large urban environments. We were really meant to be out in nature, traveling across the plains, running after
buffalo and living within the natural surroundings.”

He was totally straight-faced.

And so it brings me to this “nature cures all” lesson. Which simply means that when you feel “off,” out of whack, depressed or just crappy, your first solution should always be to get out in nature.

Take a walk in a park.

Cycle on a country road.

Run along a river or lake.

It is the oldest form of meditation. Far from the noise and intensity of the urban jungle, nature works wonders for us. My blood pressure lowers, my gratitude increases and my life feels better every time I practice it.

Bet it does the same thing for you.

Tom Hering is a certified Boomer. Just ask him about his love for Shasta grape soda, fritos and VW bugs. By day, he is a copywriter and storyteller (www.heringcreative.com) at his world hq in Portland, OR. Previously, he worked as writer and creative director for respected agencies in Seattle and Portland. Tom is somewhat fanatical about working out (practice what he preaches at boomermale.com), rooting for the Ducks and enjoying the proverbial IPAs of P-town. Hanging out on weekends includes hiking the Columbia River Gorge and cycling (a new addiction) with one of his sons and a few friends.
