Life Lesson 31: You are NOT What You Own

You are not your luxury SUV, Architectural Digest home or blue-chip investment portfolio.

“The greatness of man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his
integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.”
— Bob Marley

Your true wealth is something far more valuable: Your relationships with others. Namely, your family, friends and neighbors.

But in this crass age of conspicuous consumption, it’s easy for boomer males to feel you’re not measuring up if you don’t drive a fancy automobile. Or own the big house. Or kill it on Wall Street.

The truly wealthy are those who make a difference in the world. That difference can be measured by being a great parent, an enthusiastic volunteer for worthy causes or an unconditional and loving partner or husband.

So never lose sight of that even if you’re temporarily blinded by the usual suspects of materialism.

Continue to fill your life with meaningful experiences.

Tell your children how much you love them.

Volunteer to help the less fortunate.

Smile at a passerby on your neighborhood streets.

They promise to be the richest of experiences, as most of you know by now.

About Author

Tom Hering is a certified Boomer. Just ask him about his love for Shasta grape soda, fritos and VW bugs. By day, he is a copywriter and storyteller (www.heringcreative.com) at his world hq in Portland, OR. Previously, he worked as writer and creative director for respected agencies in Seattle and Portland. Tom is somewhat fanatical about working out (practice what he preaches at boomermale.com), rooting for the Ducks and enjoying the proverbial IPAs of P-town. Hanging out on weekends includes hiking the Columbia River Gorge and cycling (a new addiction) with one of his sons and a few friends.
