Lesson 7: Easy Credit Stinks

Host: Tom Hering

In my book 51 Life Lessons Every Boomer Male Should Have Learned by Now, I write about key lessons that I believe every evolved boomer male needs to know to make his third act his best. They fall into one of three categories: health, wealth and happiness. Each lesson serves to inspire and motivate you.

“Too many people spend money they haven’t earned, to buy things they don’t want, to impress people that they don’t like.”
— Will Rogers

“No down payment, easy credit!”

How many times have you heard that in your 50 plus years on the planet?

Of course, it would not have been used so much if it was not having an effect. From the car dealer to the department store, appliance shop to jewelry showroom, businesses have an easy solution to financially
challenged consumers.

Perhaps you’re struggling with finances now.

Maybe you dealt with bill collectors in the past.

Whatever the case, I can speak from personal experience that having money issues is about as bad as it gets.

Sleepless nights, knotted stomach and a major case of the “blahs.”

I’m reminded how the majority of our parents, having lived through the Great Depression, subscribed to a simple philosophy when it came to money: Don’t spend more than what you take in.

We can play victim all we want—a bad economy, a tumbling stock market, a horrible divorce, or an unforeseen illness can quickly knock us on our financial butts.

But then we need to get up, dust ourselves off and move forward.

Sure it’s a painful lesson. One I know all too well.

Yet thanks to some good advice from financially successful friends of mine, I’ve got a plan to right my retirement ship and start sailing in the right direction.

Saying “so long” to easy credit isn’t such a difficult lesson after all.
