There’s No Age Limit on Start Ups

If you’re thinking you need to be under 30 with lots of ink on your body to launch a start up, think again. A recent post at Forbes.com tells the story of one Robert Gray who never intended to go into business for himself. But at age 65, the out-of-work electrical engineer hit upon a successful business idea at a college reunion. The idea: an iPhone app for travelers to New England. The rest, as we say, is history. Which means Gray’s company, At-Hand Apps is profitable.

There’s No Age Limit on Start Ups

“I (was) about the last person in this 60-member gathering to have held a corporate job. Virtually all theses smart men and women had been released from their corporate careers as much as a decade ahead of the ‘65’ retirement marker,” Gray recalls. “All this talent was going to waste and all the ‘consulting’ cards handed out were tattered and had clearly not seen the light of day.”

Here are the three pieces of advice from Robert Gray to aspiring boomer start up advice, boomer maleentrepreneurs who have left the corporate world:

1. Enjoy the trip: “Really love some aspect of what you do,” says Gray. “By 50, it is much too late and lame to be engaged in something you hate.”

2. Your new world isn’t anything like your old world. “We thought our work would be a smooth transition from past activity within the corporate sector. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

3. Leave your corporate world ego behind. “In a very small group, you are constantly confronted with your personal limits and strengths. You will not be good at everything. Get over it.”
