Boomer Male Adventures: Pacific Crest Trail

0

My boomer male buddy Mike and I have talked about a Pacific Crest Trail adventure for quite some time. About 15 years ago (in our mid-40s), we hiked the 40-mile Timberline trail on Mt. Hood over a weekend.

Since that time, he and I have discussed doing parts of the trail, eventually traveling the entire 2,650-mile Mexico to Canada route. Kids in college, career stuff and parent’s health issues all seemed to get in the way. But we are getting another surge and this post about a 70-year-old guy nicknamed “Mountain Man Mike” has me all amped up again.

How To Hike the Pacific Coast Trail

“I’m not suggesting that today’s 70 is the new anything, but rather that at 70 there are still a myriad of adventures upon which a boomer can embark.”

– Ken Solin

A couple of things I find inspiring about the post and Mike’s big adventure. He’s been training boomer male, pacific crest trailfor over two years with full support from his wife of 35-years. She and his adult sons will be helping with food drops along the way.

Mike plans to hike 17 miles a day with a 70 pound pack. He also received only 1 of 1000 permits issued by the Pacific Crest Trail Association. Fewer than 200 finish making it an exclusive club to say the least.

It shouldn’t come as any surprise that Mike’s hero is John Muir (1838-1914), the naturalist and founder of the Sierra Club, who frequently wandered in the wilderness for long periods of time with just a pack.

By day, he is a copywriter and storyteller (www.heringcreative.com) at his world hq in Portland, OR. Tom is somewhat fanatical about working out (practice what he preaches at boomermale.com), rooting for the Ducks and enjoying the proverbial IPAs of P-town. Hanging out on weekends includes hiking the Columbia River Gorge and cycling (a new addiction) with one of his sons and a few friends.
