Do you wonder if you as a boomer male are living in one of the 10 worst states for retirement? You need wonder no more. Our friends at Kiplinger.com, Washington, D.C.-based publisher of business forecasts and personal finance advice, did the research for you and us. They crunched numbers for us boomer males and examined key issues like affordability, crime rates and taxes.

The good news is everything is spelled here out in a no-nonsense manner. The bad news is that I live in one of those 10 worst states for retirement (Oregon).

10 States with Above Average Living Costs for Boomers

The following states might be great places to work, raise a family or visit, but they hold the least appeal when judged strictly as retirement destinations.

You will notice these 10 states are scattered across the country. So you can’t easily conclude they are problem with the those states in the west or eastern seaboard. But they all share one thing in common: they may wreak havoc with fixed income boomers.

10. Texas: Retirees may feel lonely in the Lone Star State. Just two other states have a smaller percentage of residents age 65 and older.

8. Oregon: Oregon levies one of the highest state income tax rates in the country.

7. Nebraska: Aging Cornhuskers have the lowest average household income on this list, at 19.0% less than the national average.

6. North Carolina: Property crime in North Carolina is above the U.S. average.

5. Minnesota: The “Gopher State” taxes Social Security benefits the same as the feds.

4. New York: Probably no surprise here but the state sports the highest living costs of any state in the country.

3. New Mexico: For every 100,000 residents in New Mexico, there were 3,705 property crimes, including burglary and car theft, and 613 violent crimes, such as rape and murder, in 2013.

2. California: Plain and simple, California imposes the highest state income tax rates in the nation.

1. District of Columbia: The nation’s capital has the second-highest cost of living in the U.S.
